Kindhearts is a local charitable organization, who run several charitable food initiatives. They work with kindergartens and schools to provide them with food. Kindhearts will send out an email every week to the participating schools asking what they need for the following week. The schools place an order, which Kindhearts then source, and volunteers courier the packages to the schools. There is no criteria - if the school says they need it, then Kindhearts provide it. The participating schools are currently: Somerset Kindergarten in Highbury, Takaro Kindergarten, Awapuni and Roslyn. All are low decile schools, but Kindhearts hope to expand the service and that a variety of schools will participate. Kindhearts also provide a service at the children's ward at Palmerston North hospital. They donate baked goods (5 ice cream containers every day) and stock a cupboard in the parent's room with non-persihable food items (tinned spagetti, museli etc). In the neonatal unit they provide snack food and vouchers for the cafeteria. They provide fresh savoury food through donations from local cafes. The cafes provide 2 ice cream containers filled with savoury food (for example mini quiches, scrolls, chicken sausage rolls, mini filo pastries etc.).
